New Day
John sat on the roof of McKay Tower, just watching the sun come up over New York.
The city had changed so much in the last seventy years - all glass and chrome - but so much was still the same. Far below, John knew, shops were opening, cars were honking, people were going about their lives, just like they had done when he was a boy.
“Sheppard?”
Rodney stood in the access doorway, wearing ragged blue jeans and a t-shirt so threadbare that John could see his arc reactor glowing in the dim morning light. “What are you doing up here?”
John shrugged. “Just looking.”
“Are you feeling okay?” Rodney pressed. “MIKO says you’ve been up here for an hour.”
“I’m enjoying the view,” said John, then held out his hand, waiting until Rodney came and took it. “Thinking about the future.”
“What were you thinking?” Rodney asked, softly.
“How lucky I was that you came to find me,” John said, honestly.
“Sheppard…”
“I mean it. When they pulled me out of the ice, I was alive but I definitely wasn’t living. It’s like I was drowning in the past, in all the years I missed. But you saved me.”
“Sheppard…”
“They turned me into a legend while I was asleep,” John continued, “And no one could see me anymore. Until you. And you saw all of me, Rodney. Colonel America and John Sheppard, and you never made me feel like I had to choose between them.”
Rodney took a step back. “If you’re going to get sappy, colonel, I’m leaving.”
He turned to go, but John caught his wrist. “You know, for someone who toots his own horn as much as you do, you’re not very good at taking compliments.”
“I don’t have much experience with them,” Rodney admitted, letting John tug him closer. “Most of the people who give me ‘compliments’ want something from me. You just want me.”
“I guess we’re lucky we found each other, then,” said John and leaned in for a kiss.
