Lovers and Dreamers
Sam didn’t move when she heard footsteps on the other end of the dock, keeping her eyes fixed on the sky, inky black with stars that shone like diamonds.
“Thought I’d find you out here,” said Jack.
“Hmm,” she agreed.
There was a brief shuffling, then he stretched out beside her on the blanket, warm all along her side.
“You know,” Sam said, after a moment, “I think I would have married you just for the view.”
“So, everything else is just a bonus?”
She looked away from the stars to find warm brown eyes smiling at her. “A really, really nice bonus.”
“Sweet,” said Jack. He kissed her briefly, then rolled to lie flat on his back. “So, Dr. Carter, are you gonna tell us all about what we’re looking at?”
“No.”
“No?” he repeated, surprised.
Sam smiled. “No science, just stargazing.”
“Ah.”
“I’ve seen the night sky on dozens of other worlds,” she continued. “But none of them are ever as magical as the view from here on the Earth. I remember being little, looking up at the stars and dreaming of being an astronaut. Of being out there with them.”
“Yeah,” Jack agreed.
“But we wouldn’t have been. Out there, I mean. NASA hasn’t gotten farther away from Earth than the far side of the Moon. The best an astronaut today could hope for is a shift in the International Space Station.”
“And you’ve commanded an alien city in another galaxy,” said Jack.
“Yeah.”
“But you still want to look up at the stars.”
“Yeah,” Sam repeated.
“Good,” said Jack, and they settled in to watch the sky.
