“Here,” said Howell, shoving a cup of coffee at me.
“Uh, thanks,” I said, surprised. It wasn’t entirely unusual for my partner to buy me coffee, but he’d seemed kind of annoyed at me during our shift.
He started up the patrol car again. “Maybe if you’re drinking that, you’ll stop humming.”
“I wasn’t,” I protested.
“You were. The same stupid notes, over and over.”
“I-” I frowned, then hummed a few lines.
Howell scowled. “That.”
“Sorry.” I took the sip of my coffee, then sang, “Beet, beet, sugar beet, sugar be-et…”
“Rookie,” he growled.
I grinned. “Sorry, sir.”
