I'm okay. We did have warnings (more on this in a sec), but we were VERY fortunate. I am, however, EXTREMELY displeased with my parents (also more on this in a sec

Lightning can hit at least 20 miles away from the actual storm itself. We had bolts we could easily see, the sky's getting increasingly dark and yet here's my dad just mowing away... *headdesk*
I think Bestie called it when she said my folks have a bad case of the 'fuckits' when it comes to storms - I have a hard time believing anybody can be that ignorant of the risks, so they either foolishly think they're immune or that there's nothing one can do so the hell with it. SMH
And I heard from SIL this morning - her relatives are all safe, though her dad's gravel driveway is all kinds of messed up (he lives on a very steep hill with a very narrow drive that's treacherous to navigate even in the best of weather conditions).
Yeah, that's like those people in the path of a hurricane with 4 days' notice to evacuate. "Pfft! We've made it through a Category 1 before. We can ride out a Category 9, no problem!"
I'm glad your sil's family is ok. I read on NOAA's website that it's supposed to be a less active tornado season, so I hope they are right.
I've been through a tropical storm and those are basically the equivalent of bad thunderstorms here, except with a lot more water. I learned from my time in Florida to watch the locals who've been around for years (and thus experienced more storms) - if they were calm, odds were good; if they were stocking up and/or splitting, though, then it was time to worry. Me, personally, I wouldn't stick around for anything rated Cat 2 or above. If the winds don't get you, the flooding almost certainly will (or what's IN those waters - I remember reading a horrid story once about a guy who survived a massive hurricane by Galveston, floating in the water - he saw a big piece of driftwood and swam over to it, only to find that it was covered with FIRE ANTS).
