ugh, that is one thing that always pisses me off about job postings for the embassies. you're supposed to already have legal work status in that country.

i have no advice for you, but i don't think there's any special way around it unless you 'know someone' if you get my drift. good luck.

It all seems so needlessly roundabout and confusing! And sadly, the State Dept. is one of the few places I don't know someone...

Thanks!!!

I have a friend who used to work there, I can try to ask her.

Lots of Americans have the right to work in the UK for other reasons though so they don't have to apply for a work permit. Good luck!

That would be awesome if you could. Despite my familiarity with US immigration requirements I'm completely confused by the UK visa process.

Thank you!

A lot of embassies employ local staff and advertise those positions in this manner. It means they don't intend to help you apply to get a work permit - you need to legally be able to work in the UK already *before* applying for this job.

I know, I just thought this one may be different as it requests a USC with some specific requirements.

while it may specify you need to be an American citizen, does it specify you can't be a dual citizen? If not, they are probably fishing for dual citizenship holders and the spouses/family members of Americans who are already working in the UK.

No, but it requires a high security clearance which is extremely difficult to obtain as a dual citizen.

you might want to post this to the brit_americans community there are lots of questions about jobs there and someone probably has had a smiliar experiance. they can probably give you specific details as to who to call.

I know that this is a relatively old posting and a reply is probably irrelevant now but having been in a similar situation I can comment on what experience I had ( ... )
