Why can't they do gorgeous guys and geeky women?

I've wondered that myself for two seasons now.

Probably has something to do with having to sell the idea to TV network executives.

Or maybe the producers are just saving up that idea to pitch to Lifetime. ;)

(Or, more likely, to pull out when the show needs an extra bit of "oomph" as it seems they have yet to run out of interest in the current set-up.)

I've noticed that, at least on "reality tv" or tv in general, that people are much harsher towards geeky, typically average-looking women, than they are towards geeky men. Women are "supposed" to be flawless, perfectly made up all the time, and intelligence comes second to all that in terms of popularity. However, most of the time, men who have geeky or supposed "nerdy" traits don't seem to get insulted as much, or treated as much like they're freaks in some way.

In my own personal experience, geeky women aren't as "accepted" in mainstream society as geeky guys. Who do most people think of when they think of gamers, for example? Young guys. And about 80% of the math majors at my school were male.

Just saying. It seems to be pretty ingrained in our society, or, at least mainstream media, stupid though it may be...

Geeky/nerdy women just plain aren't that common out there.

Heck, it wasn't until I moved down here and started running with the crowds that I do that I met real geek girls in real numbers. Sure, in college there were one or two--but not a dozen.

While I'm sure that it's an under-tapped market segment, I'm also pretty sure it's not a huge market segment.

So, I don't think it's stupid... just (vaguely) realistic.

Thanks to some media exposure (and the Internet), though, I think we'll see that change over the next generation.

Then the halls of geek-dom and dork-itude will finally have the even mix of men and women that they so desperately deserve. :)

OMG, I remember Beauty and the Geek! I admit it was pretty entertaining. Especially since one time, one of the girls let slip that she thought one of the guys was ugly, and he responded with something with "At least I'm not a brainless ditz" or something, and then it turned into this whole melodrama. Bwahahaha.

I've been pleasantly surprised by how much growth has consistently occurred with both groups of contestants. Sure, there's some that start out all "Eww, gross, nerds" and "hominahominahomina... pretty girl *hide*" but they always get over that.

It is, really, quite the show to reaffirm some hope in humanity.

As opposed to, say, Survivor, which just brings out the worst and, therefore, doesn't get watched by me.

Or America's Next Top Model. it's literally just half an hour of girls ripping apart each other's self-esteem, while Tyra Banks just sits in the background and nods approvingly or makes criticisms.
