Knut Ist Gut

Apr 03, 2007 15:56

You all know that I am not usually one to simper over baby animals. However, I am completely charmed by Knut, the polar bear cub in the Berlin Zoo. He has the cuteness of a thousand puppies. And now he has his own theme song, too, complete with oompah band!

I know! Seriously, I am pretty much immune to kittens and bunnies, but Knute has completely stolen my heart.

I know, I can't animal pictures. I think they're so ... tacky. But that little thing! He's adorable!

Smart boy! I am only wondering why there is no 24-hour Knut-cam like they have for that panda in Washington. I want constant cuteness updates!

Aww, so cute... and I love the song. It's so awful in that uniquely German way.

The commentary at the end of the video seems to be in Dutch!

Yeah, what's up with the Dutch*? Maybe that was just from the person who posted it. Given the quality of the titles, I suspect that this is a Knut fan-vid and not the official Knut ist Gut release from the label. I don't care as long as I get my Knut fix.

* and leave it to the linguists' daughters to recognize it.

I had also assumed the Dutch was from the person who posted it. I took German in high school, so that helped me to recognize the Dutch (looks a bit like German but is not). And yeah, Dutch linguists have hung out at my house over the years.

Anyone who took German in high school was subjected to all kinds of strange German pop and folk music (I've even heard German "rap"), much of it eerily similar in sound and spirit to the Knut song. My favorite, which we used to sing every year for Columbus Day, is "Ein Mann Der Sich Kolumbus Nannt".

My schoolgirl German days were long before there was any rap music to subject us to, but at German summer camp we learned songs like Meine Oma fährt im Hunnerstähl Motorrad.

And you are the only other person I know that I can use my bad linguistics joke on. There's a whole series of classic jokes that I studied in a sociology course that are based on professions:

She was moonshiner's daughter, but I loved her still.
She was an electrician's daughter, but she couldn't refuse.

My own version:

She was a linguist's daughter, but she couldn't decline.

(Repeated frequently after I got a C in Latin.)
