You all know that I am not usually one to simper over baby animals. However, I am completely charmed by Knut, the polar bear cub in the Berlin Zoo. He has the cuteness of a thousand puppies. And now he has his own theme song, too, complete with oompah band!

Anyone who took German in high school was subjected to all kinds of strange German pop and folk music (I've even heard German "rap"), much of it eerily similar in sound and spirit to the Knut song. My favorite, which we used to sing every year for Columbus Day, is "Ein Mann Der Sich Kolumbus Nannt".

And you are the only other person I know that I can use my bad linguistics joke on. There's a whole series of classic jokes that I studied in a sociology course that are based on professions:
She was moonshiner's daughter, but I loved her still.
She was an electrician's daughter, but she couldn't refuse.
My own version:
She was a linguist's daughter, but she couldn't decline.
(Repeated frequently after I got a C in Latin.)
