Last night I went to see The Gang's All Here, a Busby Berkeley musical from 1943, featuring Carmen Miranda. The story was flimsier than usual, about a soldier who falls in love with a chorus girl despite being promised to the girl next door (in tony Westchester). I'm really sad about the demise of movies.
Some things cannot be the same on DVD or whatever. The big screen in a theater isn't absolutely necessary for every movie, but for many of the best, yes.

When I was a kid and through college, there were so many movie theaters around the Bay Area that showed classic films. The UC, The Rialto, Telegraph Repertory Cinema, Pacific Film Archive. I saw a lot of the greats on the big screen (double features, too!). That was just before VCRs became common. In New York now I am lucky to have access to Film Forum, and some of the museums have good programs, though they can be hit or miss. I'm always on the lookout for chances to see films as they were meant to be shown.
