Inception

We went to see this at the IMAX last night. It was visually stunning, especially on the super big screen. And I'm very glad that I read all the spoilers first, so I knew what to look for and could follow everything better. I'm not really going to say much about the plot, because pretty much anything I said would end up being a spoiler for this film ( Read more... )

Where did you read spoiler info? (I'm hunting for good reading info right now on this movie.) I think I expected more, so I'm suspecting I missed something.

I honestly didn't expect all that much. I was completely underwhelmed by The Matrix, and I figured this was just its latest incarnation. I thought Inception was modestly clever and extremely pretty, especially if you like expensive hotels, which I do.

I got the best spoiler analysis (basically a scene-by-scene breakdown) from Salon*. The letters go into even more explicit detail, not to mention significant dispute.

*If you aren't a member, you may have to watch a 1-minute commercial to get a day pass to Salon.

It's very pretty, yes. But so ridiculous, especially in terms of the, uh, plot. I kept coming up with more and more plot holes as I thought it over, and eventually just had to stop thinking about it, because it's so overblown in terms of how profound and mysterious it wants to be.

Slash? I dunno. It would have to be crackfic slash, if at all, because it's just such a spork-able film. But yes, Cobb/Arthur makes sense. So would Fisher/Saito (bonus points if Fisher suddenly recognizes Saito, which was one of the biggest plot holes).

Yeah, although Fisher seemed like he was so self-absorbed he never noticed anybody else anyway.

Saito got the best line, though: "I bought the airline. It seemed neater."

I thought the most fun was actually playing "spot the homage/influence." It was all I could do to suppress my urge to shout "Rosebud!" during the deathbed scenes. Mostly, I chose to simply suspend disbelief and go along for the ride, but I did get very hung up on how the linens stayed on the bed when the hotel room turned upside down. I'm sure that was really the least of it, but once it caught my attention it was hard to let it go.

Oh! Thank you! I've been eyeing the trailers, wondering whether it would be worth it to go see it on a big screen. Apparently, yes!

(Is it very violent/scary? It's K13 here, meaning that Katrina can come with us parents, but should we take her? Not that she's not that sensitive with films, unlike her baby sister who has trouble watching K7 films....)

If you are going to see it at all, see it on the big screen. However silly and faux-profound the plot gets, the visuals are spectacular.

It's pretty violent. There is a whole lot of gratuitous shooting, and there is also a basic rule of this 'verse that if you die in a dream, you wake up, so people kill themselves just to get out of a situation. More potentially disturbing is the suicide of the main character's wife, which is pretty much at the heart of his main motivation. Mostly, I think it would be confusing for a kid -- too many wheels within wheels. You could miss half of what's going on trying to answer her questions.

Here's a more detailed review from Kids In Mind. That is generally a good site for figuring out what kids should watch.
