(Also I really don't understand why people keep denying Melville's mad crush on Hawthorne, or that really, really, his wife was not a particularly happy lady during their marriage.)
Alternatively, it's the story of an enormous badass a million miles away from home thrown into the life of this chatterbox weirdo, who takes said weirdo under his incredibly handsome wing.
(Something about ~preserving his memory~ or whatever. As though being queer as a three dollar bill were anything to be ashamed of. The rampant misogyny, on the other hand, could stand to be shamed more.)
i think that part, when ishmael called queequeg to bed and seriously tried to teach him why it was no good suffering cold and hunger for worshipping his quaint little god, looks exactly like a worried housewife worrying too much, for "her" husband's well-being. and did you notice queequeg's understanding and tolerant smile? you must did!
I forgot about that bit! I did notice Queequeg's smile, it was very cute.
and about hawthorne/melville: you think hawthorne did not return melville's feelings? not a tiny weeny bit? you know what, i always wonder what happened at the day they bid farewell. it is said that, if i didn't misinterpret, the second last time they met hawthorne wrote about the whole thing in his journal, but the last time they met he didn't write a word. i thought that hawthorne's feelings for melville might be complicated, and that's why he kept silent about their last meeting. what do you think?I think I need to do more research into the Hawthorne/Melville relationship because this sounds promising
