I'd actually like to think that that's totally what Hugo was going for with that bit.

Aren't rampant contrived coincidences in classic literature fun? Though I think my favorite on that front is still Great Expectations.

I haven't read Great Expectations yet. I keep getting it confused with The Great Gatsby. Just how contrived are its coincidences?

Haha. I find Gatsby much more entertaining even if people will tell you it's overrated. Great Expectations has a nice little string of OH LOOK THIS MYSTERIOUS PERSON CONNECTED TO YOU WAS REALLY RIGHT HERE UNDER YOUR NOSE THE ENTIRE TIME OHOHOHO WHAT SAY YOU TO THAT GOOD SIR moments. But it's good dramatic fun and keeps the audience coming back for future installments, I guess, so fair play to Mr. Dickens.

I stumbled here from that Frollo picture I saw on deviantART.
And started reading your text.
And laughed and laughed and laughed. This so funny - of course because this is also so true!

And I love, besides the Frollo picture, the picture of that happy cat in his fruit cap. XD
