Praise Allah!

I TOTALLY just did the "praise Allah" hands here at work.  I don't know if that gesture has stuck around in my "lexicon" all these years, or if maybe I've always made similar happy gestures, or if I really did just pull it back out this very moment.  (I won't tell you what it was that made me happy; it's terrifically dorky.)  Good thing I didn't ( Read more... )

I kinda enjoyed most of the lectures... but did anyone like their discussion section? Mine felt like a giant waste of time, because our prof didn't manage to lead the discussion much, or really get into the ideas being presented, and the students were largely... uhm... superficial might be the word.

And I didn't even have Aaron's nigh-legendary oral fixation to keep me busy!

Yep - our discussion section was bizarre, too. The prof was having a rough semester and the class was largely a bunch of nitwits, which resulted in various amusing days. One day, she kicked all but the 3 physicists out of the class. Another day involved throwing an umbrella at someone's head. That said, I can incorporate phrases like 'the construct of the Other' into totally random situations, should that ever prove useful.

I thought the readings were generally horrible, and I LIKE that sort of stuff. Interconnectedness between cultures and whatnot. (Out of all the traditional areas of study, I found the geography course I took while at Harlaxton actually got the closest to exploring those concepts. I think the intersection of geography, anthro, and history is what interests me most. ANYWAY.) I don't blame the students for being superficial, because I never found anything interesting to say about those readings. Admittedly, my prof had NEWBIE stamped on his forehead, so maybe other more talented lecturers were able to demonstrate meaning, but I rather doubt it. The discussion leaders were doomed because the course wasn't properly focused. And glancing at the online catalog, it seems they've discontinued the group course in favor of making it a category requirement, like the International one we had ( ... )

I had Jim Tuten. The rest of the class was sort of lack-luster, but it wasn't nearly as painful as other peoples'.
