Feedback rant

Apr 24, 2006 20:53

A while back emmagrant01 made a post about feedback on LJ vs. on FA. Some of the comments made me see red. Still, this rant is in no way about Emma, and I didn't post this as a reply to her journal because that's her private place, and the following has nothing to do with her. Besides, this a far cry from what she meant in her post, and I'm well aware of that ( Read more... )

*stands and applauds* Very well said. You are completely right. Without readers... what are writers doing out here? As a writer, I get a smile at every one of my comments/feedbacks and try to reply, even if it is my own one-liner. Sometimes I fail, but I would never critisize a reveiwer. Do I like long-winded discussions on my fic? Yes. Would I love to sit down and discuss the finer points? Of course! Am I just freaking happy that somebody read it? Damn straight!

Thank you, dear :) I was a bit afraid that my venting would offend someone, but at least you know what I'm talking about. And I guess you would, reviewing other people's fics.

I don't think many people intentionally leave upsetting comments, it's just that the author looks at things from such an emotional place that simple words get a bigger meaning than they were supposed to. There are those morons that go out of their way to try and hurt you, but fortunately that's not often the case around here.

Btw, I love discussing a fic with the author. You get the chance to ask questions that were bothering you, or sometimes a whole new perspective to the story. I still have Good Start Back open in one of my tabs, because I really want to give it more than the standard one-liner. It certainly has earned more.

Good rant! I've been working on a rant about feedback (both giving and receiving it) for the rant meme I promised people ages ago -- do you mind if I link this and reference it? :D

Thanks! This was pretty much my first on-line rant, and damn it felt good. Go right ahead, and I'll wait eagerly to read your spin on things :)

Thank you! :) It seems we have a lot in common. I don't write either, and sometimes get really frustrated with my English when I just can't find the right words to express myself.

Because I'm a non-native speaker, I have to put a lot of thought into everything I say, and then if an author doesn't acknowledge it in any way... Okay, it's their decision, but I'm certainly not going to just sit by when they complain about their feedback. At least people are talking to them.

Glad you enjoyed.
