North and South, Spooks

Sep 15, 2006 23:01

Velp, I finished North and South. Three days. Not a record for me but sooner than I was expecting. I admit I stayed up until about 3:00 last night reading it madly, and then read the last couple of chapters this afternoon after I got home from school. There are few  books I care enough about to stay up late for, but every now and again a book  ( Read more... )

I love Spooks!! I really do!! I started watching because of Matthew Macfadyen and I had the same doubts you have about liking the rest after he left and I simply adore it!!! The series is different but is still one a very good spy series ( ... )

Interesting-thanks for the info.:D And opinion. Although I can't keep watching at the moment as Netflix doesn't have it and we don't get any Brit channels. *sigh* I'll just buy the series later on and watch it straight through I think. But I still regret Tom...

Jane Austen was born in 1775 and died in 1817. Her novels are set in what's known as the Regency period. Elizabeth Gaskell was born in 1810, when Jane was 35 years old. Her books are set in the mid-Victorian period, in industrialized England, near the start of the American Civil War. One of the things I found fascinating about N&S was that Gaskell included the ripple effects that the tensions in America at the point were having on merchants like Thornton in England. If there was going to be a sequel to N&S, it would have to be Thornton moving to another industry besides textiles, because there would be a blockade on Southern cotton from America throughout the Civil War.

"Spooks" lost it's appeal for me after Tom's departure. He just had so much of angst and show seemed to be much darker during the first two seasons; it was much more about moral dilemmas. I still want to re-watch season 4 "properly" and see if Adam's character will draw me in at the end.

Much love for your N&S reading - my favourite moment is when Mr. Thornton is dreaming about Margaret. But the last scene at the train station is so beautiful in the TV dramatisation!!!!!!!!!

Hee, I still prefer P&P. :)

About Spooks, I love that show. I started watching because Tom was delicious, but I always felt the writers wouldn't want to go into the romantic direction and linking him with Zoe, which kinda sucked. If they had taken that course of action, maybe the ending for them, their departure, would've been more interesting. Cool thing is, Zoe went to Chile. YAY!! Also, worst postcards ever. But that's me.

On the other hand, Adam is fantastic. I really do like him a lot. He's very laid back and nice, he kinda brings people together, and at the same time he has such an amazing backstory. His wife is gorgeous and they have a wonderful chemistry together. I didn't think I'd keep watching after Tom left, but Adam really is a fantastic character.

Ah-thank you. Really was puzzled by that as in general it means "estimated time of arrival!"
