I totally hold the same expectations, especially the assassination attempt and the steps towards socialism. But, honestly, I'm less nervous about the socialism than I should be, maybe. Unregulated capitalism had it's chance, and it screwed things up. Something different would be good. It would be best, though, if we switched to some kind of bastardized socialism, a system that recognized the need for people to treat themselves as a community while still valuing the rights of the individual. But, I guess we'll see how it goes.
We already practice a bastardized form of socialism. How much of the inner workings of the US do you think the government owns? They have our schools, some 78% of the stock market, if I remember right...some of our health care, and now our banks.
So, yeah. It's practically socialism in everything but name and real practice. The free market system would work with regulations, but greedy lobbyists keep wanting Congress to throw them out. We can see where that has gotten us.
I do think a different approach is needed, at least temporarily, in order to restore order to the economy. We do need to be careful though, not to fall into the trap of thinking that a little success means it is the way to go. That could lead us into communism if we aren't careful.
You're right about the bastardized socialism. I work for a Kansas school district; I'm very intimate with Federal and state funding. I guess I meant a *more Socialist* bastardized Socialism. ;)
Communism is scary, because that's where the rights of the individual get mole-whacked. I, for one, while I don't need to be rich and own a lot of useless junk, still like owning a little property of my own now and then. But, I'm confident things will swing back to the right before it goes to that extreme. That's the good part of having a two-party system, I think.
We are heading towards some scary, uncertain, and exciting times, yeah?
