Food journals are great! They are their own unique brand of brutal.

In case you're a fan of chocolate, I found this to be pretty helpful once upon a time when I was trying to get a hold of my sugar and dopamine binges: powdered baking chocolate. The stuff is so nasty that one spoonful in the mouth would take care of the cravings, but so gross that I wouldn't sit around and eat a ton of chocolate all day long. I also had good results with a modified candida diet, in case you're into that sort of thing, but I was a pretty extreme case of hummingbird diet.

I should pass that along to my boyfriend. I am a moderate chocolate fan, but he goes crazy for the stuff.

That candida diet is hardcore. I don't think I could stick to that (especially the part about eliminating caffeine), although it would make for an interesting experiment down the line.

"hummingbird diet." Hehe.

I was on it for only a semester, and slowly added foods in as appropriate. My taste receptors/palate were/was so off I couldn't taste the sweetness in baby carrots (or any carrots). Everyone I knew insisted that carrots were actually sweet and not totally bland, so I used carrots to gauge my progress. I ate a ton of cinnamon every morning, for some reason it really helped with the sugar cravings.

More pleasant alternative than powdered baking chocolate:
Chocolove makes a dark chocolate that is 77% cocoa. It's incredibly bitter so one tiny square = chocolate craving fulfilled + sugar cravings killed.

Also, every bar is wrapped in a love poem. :)

edit: Chocolove is easily found at Whole Foods, if nowhere else.

I think this is a good idea! I had a fitday.com food diary for a year or two to make sure I was getting enough nutrition while on the Atkins diet. I didn't mind calories so much as there was this bizarre notion going around that you'd kill your liver doing low-carb and not get enough minerals or whatever. It really did help seeing the breakdown of what I was eating day by day. Fitday also had markers for weight loss, exercise, and other fitness-related goals, and I could see how I was progressing in my efforts ( ... )

Oh yes. And of course, when you're dealing with weight and weight loss (should I end up having any) there's always that "social high" when people start saying "Have you lost weight? You look great!" Interestingly, I've witnessed people say that even when someone looked better 5-10 heavier. Weight loss seems to be a huge, ethical blind spot in our cultural.

But I digress. You are correct; I need to be careful and remind myself that I am trying to become lean and strong, not skinny, because she whispers to me, the animal brain. She says things that aren't always in my best interest. I have a 26 inch waistline; I don't need to be thinner. On the other hand, when I get to the third flight of steps in my office building I am winded, so I DO need to be more fit.
