BSG ficlet: Challenge--Kara's first attempt at cutting her own hair.

Written as a re-mix (or bizarro twin) of mintenergy's brilliant post for karathracelives challange.

Snippet

Tart apple. Green, sweet and incredibly sticky.
And currently hopelessly tangled just above her ear, caught up in a mess of blonde hair.

They were drunk. Really really drunk. Which was really the only reason she hadn't killed Helo yet. The old bucket was about to retire and the whole crew was just cruising out the last weeks of their assignments on Galactica.

A lot of free time added to a lot of booze never ended well.

So far the evening was going just fine, with minimal amounts of trouble...that is until she had just won a particularly large pot of money in triad and Helo had not taken it well. He had literally thrown his favorite good luck charm at her head.

And so now, there she was, standing in front of the mirror in the head, trying to shake herself sober enough to deal with the fact that there was no way that she would ever be able to get the damn thing out without lopping off most of her hair.

"Common, Buck, that's no use stalling. Just get it overwith," Helo was grinning like a fool, still drunk, swining his legs from his perch on the sink beside her.

"You do understand that you're a dead man, right? And a frakking sore loser," she spat at him as she picked up the scissors and tried to focus on herself in the mirror. Damn, there were two of her. She shook her head and tried to focus. The last thing she wanted to do was cut into her neck or something.

"You cheated," Helo said matter-of-factly, pointing into her face while narrowing his yes. "I know you, Kara. That's the only reason that you won't actually kill me."

She threw him a dirty look that didn't faze him at all before turning back to the mirror. With a deep breath, she concentrated as much as she could at snipping her hair, snapping the scissors shut above the offending piece of candy and letting ten inches of hair fall into the sink. It looked bizarre, and she felt light headed as she heard Helo burst out laughing.

"Shut UP, Helo," she yells at him as she continues to try to figure out how to even this whole thing out. More snips and snaps and if anything, it's looking worse and worse, hair floating down around herlike feathers being plucked from a bird.

Suddenly Helo grabs her hand and pulls the scissors from her grasp, "Stop it, I can't take it anymoe, Buck. This is awful."

"It's your fault, you little frakker! You don't get to complain," she growls, but her stomach dropped a little bit.

"Hold still, let me see if I can fix this disaster," Helo says as he squared himself in front of her, widening his stance and staring at her hair intently as he begins to try to salvage what Kara's done.

"It's kind of a shame, you know," Karl mumbled, the ambrosia on his breath still strong, but mixed with a slight sweetness. "You kinda had pretty nice hair."

Kara frowned, feeling suddenly very sober. "My dad would tell me it reminded him of a angel, long and flowing. But keeping it short was practical, especially when flying," she heard the words coming out of her mouth, unchecked He stopped cutting then, leaning back to look at her face, eyes focused. She looked past him at her reflection in the mirror, a dull ache in her chest even as her lips pulled up into a sad smile. She reached into the sink and pulled out a long lock of blonde, running it through her fingers a minute, seeing it almost as a foregin object. "Zak was always trying to get me to grow it out too. He really loved to run his hands through it."

She looked down again, guilt starting to swirl in her stomach. "I hadn't cut it since..."

Kara lapsed into silnce then, and she knew that Helo wouldn't push this. But then, he tilted her chin up so she would look at him and for a minute she thought that he was going to apologize or something and she knew she couldn't handle that.

He seemed to rethink it, though, because instead he simply said, "Hold still," as he lifted the scissors to her forehead and snipped a straight line of hair across the front. "There. At least it's not as bad a before."
He stepped back so she could inspect the damage and the reflection in the mirror surprised her. She'd never had hair this short but as much of a disaster as it was, she kinda liked it. She looked...fierce, strong, above getting hurt.

She frowned at Helo. "I don't want people thinking we're twins now because we've got matching haircuts."

He laughed out loud and just like that, everything was fine. He grabbed the lock of hair she still had in her hand. "You wish you could look this good, Buck." He held the hair above her lip to form a long moustache. "But you could always try to look like the old man."

Kara rolled her eyes and slapped his hand away, trying to punch him a he bounced out of her reach. "Maybe you should stick a lollipop to his upper lip and see if he'll shave it."

Helo's eyes lit up. "I'll got get one!" And with that, he dashed out the head, Kara's laughter echoing behind him until she realzied he might actually do it and ran after him.

Scissors were left forgotten on the counter, a mess of golden locks on the floor.

I was actually writing this earlier but forgot to finish it last night. I only really came back to it because mintenergy really wanted me to.
I know it sucks, but whatever.
Now I must go complete my traffic school.
