What a beautiful friend she is! Dogs are indeed the salt of the earth. The part about her matching your walking pace really made me smile as well. My first dog would always bound ahead on walks, until after my mother broke her ankle -- then, when she took him, he always just -knew- to not pull, to go slow! (Me, however, he still dragged along frantically!)
I think she's paying me back for taking care of her when she was a puppy. I still remember carrying her outside with one hand to encourage her to pee in the grass. Maybe she remembers it, too.
As usual, I love your writing Alyce, and I loved this entry. Una deserves lots of loves and scritches, and dogs are amazing. I hope to meet her someday, and it sounds as if she's going to be Doggy-Aunty to the baby.
's what the first dog I was around did; decided I was a human puppy, so I needed to be taken care of.
Heh. It's ok, you haven't met Kirby yet either. ^_^ Maybe walk-for-paws this coming year, assuming it goes well. ^_^
I'd love to meet Una, and Luke too although I suspect he'll take time to warm up to me.
My mom/dad had a beagle-jack-russell Mixed dog who had been their 'baby' before I came along. Mom was worried about Damelza being jealous, as before she'd been sole-doggy, but she adopted me as if I was a puppy of her own. Taught me out to behave around dogs, and would go get mom if I was crying. I did my best to repay her in her later years, making sure she was loved and cuddled and comforted during storms.
I've never forgotten her, and never will, nor will I forget Sean (my chowchow) who was my baby and my protector.
And Una hasn't met Kirby, either! She LOVES to make new dog friends. Hopefully, we can do walk-for-paws. It all depends on how well our little guy takes to being around crowds of people (we'll test that at Otakon).
No offense, but if you visited, you probably wouldn't even see Luke. He tends to make himself scarce when guests visit.
My parents didn't have a dog when I was born, but they got a very nice beagle when I was young, whom I named Perry. My parents thought this was a very sophisticated name from a 3-year-old, but they didn't know I was naming him after my favorite fruit (pears). In my mind, I would have spelled it "Peary."

I love your thought about your dog thinking you will bring home a litter:)

Una can't wait for the human puppy to arrive! The cat is just miffed that I spray him every time he tries to get in the crib.

Best of luck to you, and poor Luke!
