What, now you're telling me it's not how it normally works? :')

I have it like this with French and Russian, somewhat. A mix of old acquaintance with hopes for future, ocassionally even resulting in actually doing something about it, on and off for days at a time over the span of years... And even less for Spanish, which is tempting to me purely on ground of seeming easy. So, yeah, the eternal "someday I sure will". :D I wish you more success!

It does, but I feel stupid when I thank someone for recommending me a movie and end up watching something else.

In Spanish, I know only "mañana" and "arma". I thought I'd learn the word for money from "Money heist", but no :D One day I tried to learn Russian letters and read some articles on Wikipedia, but gave it up. Isn't it weird that a Pole who doesn't know Russian understands quite a lot of spoken language, but can't read anything in it?

Yeah, it kind of does vaguely feel like an obligation, I get what you mean, though at the same time I know it's not one and never want others feel it is either. Kind of heart/reason issue; let's not worry about it too much. And then there's of course also the list(s) no one recommended, but planned for oneself...

I hear it entices you with an easy surface and then you drown in a puzzling variety of "to be". :')

Isn't it weird that a Pole who doesn't know Russian understands quite a lot of spoken language, but can't read anything in it?Not necessarily, it's somewhat closely related, after all. Unexpected familiarity once in a while on one hand and tons of false friends on the other. Many people claim reading Russian is the easiest part, since one can get there after an hour, and while it's not untrue, I feel like they kind of miss the point - it only becomes reading (as opposed to deciphering) after it gets transparent, ( ... )

As Russian is a Slavic language like Polish, I can understand some words when they're spoken, but I can't read a thing. Heh, for me it is the opposite! I can read it and I love doing so. Once in a while I stumble about Russian Doctor Who fansites here on LJ and I try to read and see whether I recognize a word or two. And seeing the names like Matt Smith or John Barrowman, but spelled with Kyrillic letters, is hilarius! And Doctor Who is called Doctor Kto, as Kto means Who. Makes sense ( ... )
