I guess it's possible to interpret all that as Charles pleading with Erik not to put on Shaw's helmet, but during their chess conversation, Erik tells Charles he's going to kill Shaw and asks, "Do you have it in you to allow that?" and Charles doesn't answer. Later he tells Erik, "Killing will not bring you peace." So to me, all that together implies that Charles doesn't want Erik to kill Shaw and argues the point right up til Erik does it. Even though I think your take makes more emotional sense!
