To be honest, I didn't get the impression Charles actually *had* an alternate plan anymore after their chess talk - not when it comes to killing Shaw, that is

I like that take! But watching it last night, I had to notice that Charles is pleading with Erik while he's holding Shaw for Erik: "Erik, please, be the better man. You have it in you... Erik, there will be no turning back-- Don't do this!"

I guess it's possible to interpret all that as Charles pleading with Erik not to put on Shaw's helmet, but during their chess conversation, Erik tells Charles he's going to kill Shaw and asks, "Do you have it in you to allow that?" and Charles doesn't answer. Later he tells Erik, "Killing will not bring you peace." So to me, all that together implies that Charles doesn't want Erik to kill Shaw and argues the point right up til Erik does it. Even though I think your take makes more emotional sense!
