polite conversation

On Thursday we went to dinner at a friend's house. I was happy to go, as I was able to see a mutual friend and to meet her mother. The mother is in her 80s, and I was told that she has lived a very interesting life. I looked forward to talking with her, and wondered what the conversation would bring.

Hear hear! I just don't understand why there is the need to discuss this (says the woman who brought the topic to the table!), and especially to discuss it with a mind closed to what I have to say.

That is your whole problem right there, you're nice. It is not that you can not answer their questions (I've seen you. You know you could.). The problem is that you do not want to offend these individuals that are intent on insulting you in an effort to "help" you ( ... )

But I AM nice. So I can't. On the very few occasions that I've had someone on my doorstep I have been a bit shorter with my words and actions, but out in the world, and especially in a social setting, I just don't feel comfortable getting up and walking away.

I can even handle a conversation with a friend or a family member, as long as it is a conversation and not an attempt at conversion, but I generally will end the discussion when it goes too far. It's really when strangers or people I've only just met do this that I really feel uncomfortable.
