chapter one
chapter two

I didn't make coffee the next day. In fact, I purchased a gallon carton of fruit punch. I hoped Alex wouldn't ask for sugar to put in that, too.

"What's the movie of the day, Zacky?" he asked, shedding his ever-present outerwear. It is November, I thought, maybe he skips the coat during the warmer months. He's probably one of those year-round hoodie types. Weirdo.

"Saw," I declared, holding up a somewhat menacing DVD case. The cover, a rather unappetizing palate of greenish grays, displayed a pair of decomposing severed limbs, each dusted with a flaky layer of dried blood. Alex's jaw dropped half an inch and his eyes glazed over in apprehension.

"Uhm," he tried.

"Oh come on," I teased. "It's just Cary Elwes sawing off his own foot."

Alex looked unconvinced.

"I'll hold your hand."

He grew a smile and sat down on the couch. I inserted the DVD and dropped down next to him; the couch squawked in protest. Alex's fingers immediately found mine, twisting in tight.

The scene began with Adam waking up in a bathtub. As he thrashed his way out of the water, something snaked down the drain.

"The fuck was that?" Alex growled, throwing his free hand towards the television with his index finger extended accusingly.

"Shh," I whispered.

He gave up with a sigh. As Adam dried off a little bit, Alex announced,

"He's really cute."

"He's actually got a Australian accent," I told him.

"Oh, no shit." Alex blinked. "I love accents."

"Especially cute guys with accents," I reckoned.

Alex relaxed considerably at this point. He rested his head on my shoulder.

Just as I had predicted, Alex spent the entire climax squeezing my fingers and sitting on the outermost three inches of my couch cushion. I could see his eyelashes against the glare on the television as they fluttered, his lips twitching on occasion. And when the movie was finally over, Alex turned to me with a very "what the fuck" facial expression and breathed,

"Mindfuck."

"Come back tomorrow and we can watch the next one," I suggested; I had noticed that we were still holding hands, but I didn't want to say anything.

"Uhm." He swallowed hard. "Maybe let's pace the gory stuff and watch something fluffy tomorrow. Like. I need to cleanse my palate with like, a musical or some shit like that."

We laughed for a few seconds, then I suggested,

"Sweeney Todd?"

"I was thinking more like, Hairspray, but Sweeney Todd works too." Alex stood on jelly legs, dropping my hand, and stretched his arms towards the ceiling.

"Do you have another appointment tonight?" I asked tentatively.

"Yeah, but not 'til nine-thirty." Alex dropped his arms. "I don't like being a hooker," he admitted, voice dreary with truth. He looked down at me over his shoulder, sighing.

"I'm not sure anyone does," I added.

"I guess." He seemed the think for a moment, then he gathered his hoodie and coat as he spoke. "Well, I mean, it's easy, it makes me a lot of money, it gets me off, it..."

Alex fell silent, hunting for something to add to the list. I furrowed my eyebrows and then raised one.

"That's it, isn't it?" I noticed.

Alex stared at me. He stomped away, opened the door, and a rush of cold air blew in over me. His hair was tossed back from his face as he pirouetted to look back at me, and he dropped his jaw to say something, but instead shook his head incredulously and left without saying anything else.
