Picking at his gloves, Batman stared down at his hands, oddly finicky in a way that he usually wouldn't be. Being cooped up in the suit was never fun when he couldn't move around as it was meant for, and even in the comfortable temperature of the Fortress, the Kevlar and polyester clung to his skin and sweat dripped down his temples. Strictly speaking, the cowl was unnecessary, given the current company, but he was still ashamed of himself for the offer he had made Lex -- he knew the difference between wrong and right, he knew that nobody should be made to experience what he did, to have to stand in their own parents' blood and drop to their knees with that same pain. But he was dwelling on the past, and that wasn't supposed to be the thing that fueled him, really. He was supposed to be doing this for justice, now, not for his own selfish, petty revenge ( ... )

Under the cover of the large table, Leland briefly slipped her hand into Bruce's and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Knowing what she knew about Bruce and Lex, she could understand what had happened. Not justify it, but understand it. And she more then understood what it was like to feel Arkham close it's jaws around you and wonder if you could get back out.

Leland's hand in his was comforting in more ways than one. He did not usually crave physical affection, especially not when he was being Batman, but the fact that he had at least one person who did not think of him as some kind of unspeakable evil was helpful. And to know that she (or as was his impression) supported him in putting all of that out there to tell the others what was going on in his head.

"Thanks," he said to her in a voice low enough to not be heard all the way around the table.

"Well," said Superman lightly, though his eyes betrayed his true feelings, "Thank you for that. If you don't mind, you'll be stationed with me for the time being."

As much as he hated to admit it - even to himself - Peter wasn't really concentrating on Superman's extravagant introduction. His attention had instead been captured by the surreal layout of the gargantuan structure they were all seated in. Not only that, but the sheer excitement from the fact that he was in the presence of so many strong and infamous heroes had his heart doing back flips in his chest. As the famous Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar had once said, "We are not worthy!" Peter could have said the same thing ( ... )

"Apparently," Power Girl quipped, "That would be illegal. And we couldn't have that, now could we?" She shot her cousin a teasing glance before turning back to Spiderman.

"Illegal?" Peter had almost forgotten that he wasn't really allowed to break rules. "Dude, this guy's about to blow up the moon and you're worrying about if it's gonna break a few rules or not?"

He huffed an annoyed breath under his mask and averted his gaze from Power Girl's seemingly victorious stare.

Tony shot a withered look at Peter and immediately wished he'd brought along a decanter of scotch. Power Girl's comment was enough to make him hide a grin in the face of Peter's childish behavior, but he was pretty sure he could do better.

"Legality doesn't really matter, sure," he said slowly, "but what would it look like, an army of robots stalking down Lex Luthor and throwing him into a jail cell? Don't you think the public would get a little agitated and demand to know where the hell these killer robots came from? Mass hysteria isn't exactly what you'd want on a resume. At least, not yours."

Zatanna Zatara sat primly in her padded chair, fishnet-clad legs crossed and long, graceful fingers twirling her wand idly. It wasn't strictly necessary for the meeting, but Zatanna often found its presence somehow comforting. When the conversation finally lulled she cleared her throat and stood, unconsciously nudging her top hat back into place.

"I was wondering if you would be requiring my services now, before Mr. Luthor actually does something," she began in a loud, clear voice.

"I would be perfectly willing to research and perform a locator or detainment spell if you so wished. Whatever you think is for the best, of course."

"I'd appreciate a locater spell greatly, if that would make it possible to track down their base of operations. I'll admit, I know nothing about magic, so you're our resident expert. I'm open to any suggestions you have, as long as you talk us through them."

Zatanna nodded her understanding, restlessly tapping her wand against the palm of her other hand.

"A locator spell isn't terribly difficult, but it will take time to gather the ingredients. I already have the majority of the required herbs back at Shadowcrest, but there are a few things I'll need to pick up. I can also look into protection spells if you feel any of our number might be in immediate danger."

"What do you need? Make a list. I'll see what I can do."
