French hoods

I've buggered up some sewing and am therefore procrastinating by pondering on French hood colours. Specifically the brims and the falls.

The crescents on the hoods (where they exist) are all sorts of different colours and often have jewelled decorations. That's what makes these hoods so pretty. The fall (ie the veil at the back) is always black. ( Read more... )

I looked at a bunch of french hood pics when I was making Bethan's one, and I found a surprising number of them had red (or a variation thereof) crescents. I had thought they were all black, too, but apparently not...

Can't wait to see it when it's done!

Black, red-ish (incl pink, rust, etc) and white crescents do seem to be the most common. I wonder if that is because they would be most versatile because they would match most gown colours?
My hood might take a while to make as it is not a priority one project.
Plus, I'm hoping to make it so that the crescent is not permanently attached to the brim, but can be pinned on instead. That way I could use different crescents with one brim (they are such a pain to make). That's not how Tudor Tailor does it, but does seem sensible if it works. And with no extant ones in existence, there's really no right or wrong way, is there? :-)
