The little AU: Winter Hopes: Bounce

The weather's rainy, the days that odd Central Coastal California combination of the new green of winter grass and the gritty mud of adobe meeting dunes. The dogs love it though, running back and forth between the men as they toss balls back and forth, and Hunter gathers beach glass and feathers and builds a running horse of kelp and shore-beached driftwood and laughs when the dogs dance around the horse's legs as though it, too, is playing catch with the waves.

They play outside despite the gray sky and chilly rain; three days together at home has been rejuvenating. They'd not realized how much this house is home until they came back, together, Friday: their first three days together in the house at the end of the bluff road in, what? months, they guess.

It's Orlando who recognizes what's right: here, they're completely free of the outside. Nominations, gossip, paparazzi, rumours. It's all far away, all at a remove: here all the space is theirs. It's their corner of France, their quiet island, the place where all the pokes and prods of The Business are reduced to "Oh, really?" followed by dinner, or playing with Hunter, or sleeping together in the big bed.

It's Karl who recognizes what they invest when they come here: time, into the interleaving of their lives, the memories shared and single that will bring light to dark days, strength to weak moments, humour to leaven disappointments, ordinary things to ease bright lights and loud demands of the job and the world that goes with it.

But it's Viggo who recognizes what they bring to it: hope. They bring a willingness to take the next step, to take the next breath, to take the next day and the next night and add them to all the ones that have gone before regardless of threat or promise, regardless of reward or disappointment. It's the space to be themselves, the time to invest in each other, that gives them the heart to take hope, to brave the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and go on about their business as the consummate workmen- the artists- they are, each one in his own way.

The next day it's a rush- getting Karl to the airport to fly down to work, getting Hunter and the dogs and all the odds and ends in the Highlander to drive back to Venice Beach. Making sure Viggo's warm enough, making sure Hunter's gone to the bathroom before they leave- the dogs, too- having the thermos for the mate ready, and tea for Orlando, and juice for Hunter. But they get it all done, and the trip from one home to the other finds them singing nonsense songs and playing license plate games, and by the time they get back to the grey house in the grey rain, their moods are anything but grey, and their hearts are full of light, and joy.
