The little AU: Summer Dreams: Walking

On some part of the summer's travels Vig's picked up a stick. A nice stick, a branch off a tree, found down on the ground alongside a garage in a small village. Seen there two days running, unnoticed. He notices it though, picks it up, likes the weight, height, heft of it, so he brings it home and leans it against the wall where the jackets and hats hang.

It's light, both in colour and in weight. There are notches in it right where his thumb goes if he holds it right-handed, or where his middle finger lies if he holds it left-handed. The bottom's nearly flat- the right size of rubber tip on it and it'd make a nice walking stick.

He's got to go back to work though, and he doesn't need a walking stick, so after a short hop to see Orli in London (short hop? but that's what it feels like, if it's to see Orli) he's back on the road. They're each coming and going so much, it's not like they're ever at home together, but they see signs of each other- that's how Karl spots the stick.

He takes it with him, checked as baggage, when he heads off to Aotearoa for negotiations on his next film. While he's there, he reckons, he can work on it, sand and oil it, smooth the end and make it fit a rubber foot-bring it home, put it back, and surprise Vig with it.

At some point later, when they're all together again and walking on the beach, or through town, Orli will spot the stick and ask about it.

"Found it when I came to see your play, love," Vig will say, and smooth his hand over it. Karl will grin, and Orli smile, and the stick be warm and solid and useful.
