"Daddy, Daddy!" Hunter'd said, laughing and leaping into Karl's arms.
School hols are a gift, Karl thinks, swinging his son around in a bear hug. He's only got a few days here, but if he's lucky, Nat will let Hunter come back with him for the hols. It'd gone so well the year before, and neither Hunter nor Karl's nagged her about it since.
35, and what do you have to show for it? some odd voice in Karl's head whined at him. On another day that voice might drop him off a cliff into a short, sharp depression that he'd have to work his way out of, but today he just laughs. On his phone he's got pictures of something Viggo's made him, and he's still grinning about Orli's phone call. And now here's his son in his arms, and happy to see him.
What could a man ask for, more than love, friendship, and kindness?
Everything I need, he says back to the voice, dismissing it completely from his mind as Hunter drops him a big-boy kiss on his cheek then moves to get down so he can take his Dad by the hand and show him all the things he's made this year out of scrap lumber and found objects for the yard of the house at the end of the bluff road.
