Beep.  Beep.  Beep.

I know that sound.  It’s taken me a moment to place it, but I’ve got it now.  It’s one of those heart monitoring machines that let you know you’re still alive.  I must be in hospital.

Beep.  Beep.  Beep.

It’s all coming back to me.  I remember it was dark and it was raining.  I was driving home.  There was a big bang and a flash ( Read more... )

Strong character you have here - is the Terri Schiavo reference intentional or a coincidence?

Given that I just had to Google to find out who that was, I'd say it's a coincidence :) I don't recall ever seeing any news coverage on the case - I'm not American and I don't know if it ever made the leap over the Pond. If I'd known, I'd have used a different name just because it sounds like such a controversial case, I'd prefer to keep this solely in the realms of fiction.

Well, and certainly the circumstances all around are much different in your story - I think I only made the leap because I'm from Schiavo's hometown, so for me it was big, big news. I suspect most other readers won't make the connection :)

I also thought of Terri Schiavo but only because of the first name. Your story was very effective with the beeps.

Thank you. I hadn't heard of the case until now - I'd have preferred to use a different name otherwise.

This is a PHENOMENAL piece of writing. It made me tear up. It's something that, although I haven't ever had to make the decision, I fear happening to either someone I love or to me.

Very, Very well done.

It's certainly one of the most frightening things I can think of.

I always tell my husband, I'd rather my mind go before my body - I don't think I could handle being trapped in a body with a fully capable mind. It's one of my biggest fears [just after the whole eye-squick/blindness thing].

Very yes. We have an agreement that in this situation, pull the plug and don't wait, but the thought of being caught like this is just horrific.
