For quite some time after their conversation over the messenger, Fuuka had spent most of the remaining hours staring at the screen of her cell phone. No, she hadn't called Matt yet, although she said she'd let him know. . . After consulting with her parents, she had the okay-- it was New Year's Eve, after all.
This was her first time doing anything like this; there wasn't a guy she could think of that would ever invite her out anywhere. Nighttime was nearing, Fuuka knew she had to do it soon or her chance will be gone.
For a brief moment she was able to set aside her nervousness and pull up Matt's number to dial. Now to see if he would pick up.
"Ah, sure!" Fuuka replied, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically. Realizing this, a hand shot up to her mouth. "I mean-- I don't mind at all. It might be a good idea if I had something to eat."
Matt smiled warmly to the response. "Alright, lets go so we can grab a table" he said looking back at her fully now. The shyness seemed to have dissipated a bit, at least for the moment....
Matt was somewhat surprised at the hustle and bustle of the place. I guess even on holidays, there's still a lot of people around, maybe they have their own celebration set up. Matt was going to put more thought into it, but he felt his stomach begin to grumble. He hasn't eaten all day...
Matt, letting his habits get the better of him, pulled a chair out for fuuka as he waited for her to sit down.
Fuuka looked genuinely surprised by his gesture for a moment, which was quickly replaced by a small smile. She bowed her head in thanks and took her seat, almost immediately fidgeting with her hands in her lap.
Matt smiles as she sat in her seat, before going around and sitting across from her, separating the two menus, sliding one over to fuuka, while glancing at his own, before looking up at her. "Sorry if that caught you by surprise. I guess you could say I'm trying my best to break the ice and be as mannerly as possible, even though my methods are rather western" Matt said. He hoped that by talking to her, he would be able to get her to relax and get comfortable, hopefully in time for ramen.
"No, no," Fuuka assured, grabbing the menu. The truth was it did, but it was hardly in a bad way. "N- not at all." If anything, it was. . . nice, to simply put it. It was great to finally do something like this; she'd never expected to get this sort of treatment from anyone. After the things she'd been through during school, it almost made her wonder why Matt was being so kind to her. . .
And briefly, she began to question his intentions. Why would anyone do this for her? There were plenty of other better girls for a night like this, weren't there? Like one of the more popular ones. The ones everyone else did more than glance over.
Her eyes scanned over the words on the menu, but the first few times she did, they didn't register in Fuuka's mind. She blinked, snapping her mind out of her thoughts.
Fuuka decided to get the bowl she typically got when coming here. "I'm ready. How about you?"
Matt glanced over at the menu several times, checking out the different dishes that were available. He recognized many of them, but he wasn't sure which one to pick out. Matt glanced up, catching fuuka who seemed to be at deep thought at the time, before seeing her snap out of it.
"You're ready, ok...um...I can't decide, how about you order for me?"
"You. . . want me to?" she asked, unsure. Fuuka carefully looked over the choices again before picking something that she thought would suit his tastes. "How about this?" she offered, pointing to it.
Matt glanced at Fuuka's selection, recognizing the dish. It was something he hadn't had before, but has heard good things about it."Ok, sure" Matt replied...
After placing their orders, Matt took a sip from his glass of hot tea, before saying "I noticed you were really thinking hard not too long ago, something on your mind?" he said out of curiosity..
"I- I was?" Well, she was, but she didn't think it would be obvious, either. She looked slightly embarrassed, lowering her eyes toward the table. "Not really," Fuuka answered sheepishly. That wasn't a thought she wasn't willing to admit, not at a time like this. It would be awfully rude of her. "I didn't mean to make you think anything was wrong."
Matt noticed that it may haven't been the right time exactly to poke around, and wisely decided to switch topics. "Oh its ok, no problem." he said before pausing a bit. "So have you been here at Iwatodai all your life, or have you come from someplace else?" Matt questioned with curiosity and kind interest, deciding to learn more about her, but not in a forceful manner...
"Oh," she began, thankful for a much safer topic to tread on. "I've lived here all my life. We rarely go to other cities, much less have ever left the country." She forced through a smile. "But you've traveled all the way from America, haven't you?"
"Yeah, though its actually been almost 8 years now, judging from my birthday" Matt replied, using his birthday as a marker for the major events of his life. his birthday was his entrance to the dark hour, and the subsequent family destruction that took place afterwards, and only a few days later, leaving the country and his father and sisters, never to see them again. Matt decided not to share that information until he felt comfortable enough, and if he felt Fuuka wanted and deserved to know. "So yea, Ive actually lived on the opposite side of town, in the more seedier area, for most of my life until one day, I was given transfer papers to the high school. I moved into one of their dorms and thats how its pretty much been for the past few months, hence why you haven't seen me before then, unless u go to that area, then you might've...." Matt finished with a shrug...
His birthday, huh? He mentioned something earlier about something bad happening on his birthday. Was moving to Japan it? Did he want to be here? Fuuka began to feel guilty about it.
"You live in a dorm, too," Fuuka idly commented. "I didn't know so many students at our school lived in one. Or maybe I haven't been paying attention very well."
As if on cue, their waitress came by, setting both their orders on the table. "Ah! Here we go," she said.

". . . How about here?" Fuuka waved her hand in the direction of a table by the wall. "This looks like a good spot."
