With mind-numbing repetition you will see gagging, slapping, verbal abuse, hair-pulling, pounding anal sex, women smeared in semen, sore anuses and vaginas, distended mouthsWhich some of my friends have starred in, and other of my friends seek out. I would be happier with feminist critics of pornography if the people critiquing would acquaint themselves with the idea that woman are consumers of pornography as well as stars of it, and that not everyone's sexual fantasies revolve around being treated with respect and kindness ( ... )

YOU HAS ALL THE PORN FEELZ.

On the one hand, my porn is my porn and it is really awesome and I'd never give it up. That's why it was so shocking to be reminded about some of the images young men (and women) are growing up with and how that will inform them later in life. Only DIVERSITY of porn will bring about change, so my platform is more porn, better porn: the extent to which women's pleasure & agency is represented in porn. God, yes.

I have no friends in the porn industry, sadly, but I imagine that they feel similarly to many people - you want to make what you want to make and the corporate sell-this tool forces you to compromise. I'd be pleased to know if, for example, the women stars of porn were part of creating the "storyline," and not just told what to do by a bunch of dudes.

But I don't watch het porn, so hey.

Yesssssss. My friends did not work in straight porn, admittedly, and one of them left his job because his manager was demented, but none of them have decided "porn is evil", just "the adult entertainment industry is the same kind of fucked up as everything else".

Blimey, I'm sorry about the marriage problems. I do think that it's very hopeful that you'll be seeing a therapist you trust, and I think face to face sessions will create some problems but help with many more.

WRT commercial porn: sex that all parties desire and enjoy can look pretty violent from the outside--"pounding anal sex" is abusive if the bottom didn't want to have sex or didn't want to be pounded, isn't abusive if ze thinks it's great. And porn doesn't have to be immediately practicable in the viewer's RL sex life.

Yes, porn, I do agree, and I think this particular interpretation was pretty narrow. But I worry about anti-women sentiment all the damn time so am sensitive on that front.

Nice of me to put porn and marital problems in the same post, eh?

WRT your not being brave about your own life: I really, really disagree. REALLY.

About porn: whole sitch complicated by vast amount of dude/dude and lady/lady porn. Lady/lady porn generally is laughably unrelated to actual lady/lady activities. But I think it's silly to say "O noes! There are no female type persons in that pr0n so it discriminates against women!" because what's a smut-monger to do if either having or not having women in the flick is Teh Evol?

But on behalf of the entire gene pool, I am favor of straining out people who can't tell the difference between pr0nz and documentaries.

Thank you for saying that. I forget that sometimes. WRT bravery.

Even though I feel very chicken right now.

I haven't seen Girls yet but I really enjoyed Tiny Furniture, which was the film Dunham did before the show. Have you seen that/do you have thoughts on how it compares?

I have NOT seen it, but want to. Do you recommend?

I thought it was good. I have heard from some people who like Girls who did not care for TF, so I don't really know how it compares. And, I mean, the main character is a liar and a moocher and spends basically the whole movie depressed so I can see that's no fun for some people to watch. But I really liked the relationships with her friends and her mom (who I think is Dunham's real mom).

*hugs* I'm really sorry that things are rough right now with your marriage, and I hope that seeing the therapist face to face will help. ♥

I can only hope. The future looks scary from this vantage point. Not that I've ever been very brave about anything in my own life.
