Still working hard on my own life issues, so today I bring you LINKS and things from the outside world. Which you can look at from the inside! No need to leave your air-conditioned room/office/underground lair!

Saw this last week and laughed: the BBC jumps in on the old discussion of those rampant Americanisms where none should be! Why do some Read more... )

Yes, but Sherlock fandom is about to be kicked in the head when the new series comes out. I am afraid that, having read so much fic, I will now feel the show characterization is out of character...

Oh, that article. I love this idea that English has become the language of the world because of it's "anarchic" nature and not, you know, because of the British Empire. What's an official language? A dialect with an army.

Sherlock fandom will be kicked in the head? That's quite... pessimistic. Perhaps it will bring joy and sunshine to a parched fandom just like Torchwood. OH WAIT NEVERMIND.

Kick me in the head, fandom, I love it rough.

We haz an army, too, therefore our language rulez.

Oh my god, I love your icon.

One thing I've found is that over the years, as M. has picked up Americanism, I've picked up British usages to compensate. Half the time I talk about buying kitchen roll or asking the server for the bill. *shrug* But Brits, as a whole, consume more American media than Americans (even fans, except for the most dedicated) consume British. M. once commented that they would sometimes sort of forget all those people on movies and tv were speaking American, and thought of it as just sort of neutral mediaspeak.

Well a lot of the ubiquity of the English language comes from the pervasiveness of American media product. And, as ivy03 points out, colonialism and stuff.

Even the UN is slowly phasing out French.

I would prefer (and often, do) consume mostly British media, but I'm the exception to the rule. I'm always looking for some random Brit thing to watch that I've never seen.

Interesting, your comment about the Brits seeing it as neutral mediaspeak. Hm.

OMG they are epically cute and now they are BFFs and it's too much. TOO MUCH. Going to New Zealand together? Check. Perhaps Martin and Amanda will set him up with a nice girl and then their families will vacation together. Okay, that was the most ridiculous thing I've said all day. *facepalm*

I'm going to try to have seriously low expectations come fall, if that's at all possible.

For everything ever being written in Sherlock, much of it by seeming newbies -- there's a surprising lack of classic Mary Sues (annoyingly perfect OFC who overwhelms canon characters in a story). Lots of self insertions and annoyingly perfect John and Mummy, but not the other. Might be worth interrogating.

ETA: Oh, and "open kimono"! I'm pretty sure the media person who used that image was referencing a line from Mad Men, the script itself using a dated phrase. References built on references, like Chinese poetry.

You're quite right!

There must be Mary Sues by the dozens, somewhere. Perhaps I should check out ff.net to make sure the kids aren't letting us down on that front.

You've seen a lot of perfect Mummy fics? I haven't even seen that many self-insertions, but then again, I am blinking hard at most of the stuff I see anyway.
