Jonathan's thoughts: Somebody

An idyllic beach view, the cool sea breeze and lush décor of Rasa Sentosa has always been a complimentary setting to any wedding held there, and this time was no different. And to add to the atmosphere of romance and love, Simon the groom was to sing a song for his lovely bride Samantha upon their 2nd march-in.

I always have a soft spot when it comes to brides or grooms singing for their significant other, so I always try to accommodate as best as I could and go out of the way for them as a musician.

My first encounter with Simon saw him eagerly (and somewhat nervously) ensuring that Leo and I were adequately settled in and properly set up so we could rehearse his song, Somebody by Depeche Mode. Apparently he has been putting in plenty of effort; we managed to finish running through the song with Simon with plenty of time left to spare.

Leo, our saxophonist, once again managed to impress and wow the crowd with his spectacular displays of improvisation and musical intuition. It’s always quite the adventure when it comes to playing with Leo! It was also one of the uncommon instances where a couple engaged us without singers, so it was refreshing in some ways where us two musicians had to carry the entire set alone, both as a performer and as a musician.

Also heartwarming was how cordial and warm Simon and his wedding coordinator/friend treated us throughout the wedding, making our job so much easier and much more enjoyable.

Upon the 2nd march-in, Simon took to the stage as planned and after popping the champagne and giving the speeches; he confidently took his microphone, led his bride to the middle of the stage and started his sonnet of love. Upon finishing among enthusiastic cheers and applause from the guests, I could have sworn I saw a glitter of tear in the corner of Samantha’s eyes.

Compliments from Simon:

Jonathan and Leo livened up the atmosphere with their music and managed to create a lovely and casual mood to blend in the relaxed surroundings.

I’m pleasantly surprised and very impressed that given that we only have a very short time to rehearse, everything turned out well and wonderful when I sang the song.

I’ll not forget the surprise on my wife’s face and I’m very sure she’ll not forget that moment.

Many thanks!!
