(Obligatory apology for the long hiatus. Pointful excuses do not exist.)

So I finally went and had an eye exam today. Long overdue. My eyes have really gotten worse -- worse enough that I noticed my glasses becoming less and less effective ( Read more... )

That's odd. I've been switching from glasses to contacts since lower school, and never had any problems.

Hopefully I'll be able to get Lasik soon, though, and never have to worry about it again.

Well, if you never had a long hiatus from contacts, and always wore your contacts for a bit prior to an eye appointment, then it shouldn't make a difference (I infer from what my optometrist said).

I have had long breaks (longest being a year), though. In fact, my optometrist advised me to take them so that contact use wouldn't dry out my eyes and make me a poor candidate for Lasik.

Lasik works for nearsighted people, although for people with really horrible vision it may not be able to get all the way to 20/20. ISTR hearing that it doesn't always work for astigmatism (which is kind of wacky and complicated anyway).

According to my uncle the eye surgeon, who does a lot of Lasik procedures, so long as your eyes are healthy and otherwise normal and you have nice, thick corneas, Lasik can correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. The surgery changes the shape of the cornea by selectively removing part of it.

Be sure to go to a reputable surgeon for evaluation; some people are *not* good candidates for Lasik for any one of several reasons.
