Have you ever heard of the Kinsey Scale? It's a scientific rating system designed to record just how straight or gay a person is, on a scale from zero to six (completely straight to completely gay). If a character is asexual, they get an X. This is an actual scientific measuring tool, so OF COURSE it ought to be turned into a meme ( Read more... )

Oh, this is interesting. I might do this. Also, I kind of like when characters insist that they're something I didn't intend them to be. It pleases me.

It is cool when characters do stuff and/or reveal dimensions you didn't expect. :)

I would be super happy if you did this. For one, it's interesting to see and, for another, it would be cool to have my thing go micro-viral. :)

I have done this and I kinda surprised myself with the results: http://theun4givables.livejournal.com/142403.html

I'm curious as to where Breccan and Finbar stand on the scale. :)

Are you talking about the specific characters, or that whole universe of characters? I'll assume you're talking about just those two, and I can add anybody else if you're still curious. :)

---

Breccan is a six, and he's known it since he was little. He's one of those who has always known. It's part of why he became a mage, with the attendant suppression of desire. That wasn't because he was ashamed to be gay. Rather, he unconsciously knew something about his weirdly-shaped soul prevented people from liking him, so he wanted to spare himself the pain of constant rejection. He doesn't have any gayngst -- his angst comes from...everything else in his life, pretty much.

Finbar's character has been...sliding around between drafts, but I think he's something like a two. He will go after guys, but I think he might actually prefer girls. In the newest concept I have for that world, he does show interest in Breccan once Breccan gets his soul fixed. And then dumps Breccan for various reasons not related to how attracted he is to him.

I was talking about the specific characters. :)

This doesn't surprise me at all about Breccan. Finbar being undecided doesn't surprise me, either.

I'd like to see you do this for I Prefer the Mind Control. :P

Dylan: He's a 4. He likes to think he's a 3, but I really think he's slightly closer to the homosexual end of the scale. He'll have sex with anyone (especially if Xan tells him to, lol), but he's just that bit more likely to form attachments to guys. He likes to look at (and sleep with) girls, but there's that little bit...extra likelihood when guys are concerned.

Xan: He's a 3, like most Zimarans are. It's that species' default, though there are more exceptions to that rule than Zimara itself would like to admit. I think Xan likes guys and girls in equal measure, but he has difficulty getting close to anyone, until Dylan, at least. He'll make the effort for Dylan.

Ayli: She is a bit of a difficult one to pin down. She's very...opposed to mind control and just not promiscuous in the least. (This does not make her popular on Zimara, heh.) I think she's quite possibly a 0 or even possibly an X. She might actually be a combo of 0 and X, meaning she's something like demisexual and only likely to want sex with a guy she knows well and ( ... )
