Sadly the media will, as a rule, only perpetuate social and cultural norms rather than allow people a viable medium to challenge them.

The sheer inertia generated by the need to maximise unit sales by appealing to as many people as poss means that the media sits atop society's culture like some fat wrestler, stifling movement and innovation.

NME's no different in that respect, but luckily we has t'internets LOL!!1! :o)
