Response #1 to Rewind - What If?

It took me like, a week to finish this. :D

II

That whirring, buzzing sound was loud, too loud that even the dead could wake up from it. He forced himself to open his eyes and instead of darkness, which he was used to, it was a white bright light.

“Three gunshot wounds… this is amazing, his bones-”

“Doctor, he’s awake.”

There were too many voices, too much noise. He couldn’t move and he felt so weak. Let me go, he thought as he tried to move. Let me go.

“Mr. Bristow, please, relax.”

The noise slowly stopped. Then, silence. Thank god, he thought and drifted off.

That whirring, buzzing sound was loud, too loud that even the dead could wake up from it. He opened his eyes, and instead of darkness, which he expected, he saw a white ceiling. He blinked, once, twice, thrice. The ceiling didn’t disappear.

‘You're not dead, Bristow.’ He thought after a while, almost berating himself. If it was possible for someone to get him out of that cave, then what about Sloane? People would surely find him if they knew where to look.

The whirring and buzzing sound gradually ceased. He heaved a sigh of relief before pulling his body to sitting position. He took several deep breaths first and started to look around.

His body tensed when he saw the figure on the chair by the bedside. His heart leapt - from dread, anger, joy - and suddenly, he doubted if he really was alive.

‘Relax, Jack. Relax.’

But he couldn’t relax. His fists were tightly curled up, he couldn’t feel them. Oh my god, he thought, has the world ended?

II

The whirring and buzzing sound was loud, too loud that even the dead could wake up from it. However, it seemed like he’s the only one who could hear them. He closed his eyes and massaged his temple, as if it would will the sound away.

It was too much information for such a short time. Rambaldi’s fluid kept him alive in that cave but he was spared from the curse of immortality. Elena kept Irina, the real one, in a hole while her (three) clones were set forth to humanity one by one. The world hasn’t ended, and he’s been “dead” for five months.

She touched his arm, and almost immediately, that annoying sound stopped. Amazed, he looked at her. She stood by the edge of his bed, still thin and pale, but for him, still beautiful. She was observing him, almost with morbid fascination, but concern was also in her eyes.

“Relax, I’m fine.” He said and straightened up. He didn’t want her to leave. Not when she’s really alive. Not when he knew in his heart that he could trust her.

“Sydney-”

“Thinks we’re dead.” He interjected, and touched her hand, “Everyone thinks we’re dead.” They were free. Free to live their lives, together.

“This won’t be easy.” She said.

“Who said it will be?” He countered.

Irina smiled and he smiled back. Together at last, he thought. Thank god.
