People say that about drawing: apparantly I'm "talented." Actually, I've been doing it since I was four.

(And then I took two art classes, and my drawing /skills/ got much better.)

What I mean to say here is that the train of thought seems to go

1. Wow, this person draws well! I can't learn to draw because I'm not talented.

2. Oh, they've been doing it since they were four. I can't learn to draw because I don't have a couple deades to practice.

3. This person is telling me that I /can/ learn to draw in a few months. It must be silenced for the greater good!

I think what I dislike about that train of thought is the idea that there is a perfect end point where you will be able to draw perfectly (just like that talented person) and if you don't/can't reach that end point then it's no worth it. I've always felt that if you didn't actually like the process of learning something, whatever it is - dance/art/music - then you shouldn't bother. If it's only about a certain end point then you'll end up reaching it and being bored and you will have wasted a fair amount of time.

There are many people who are quite opposed to my view on this though.

You know, I've changed so much in the last year. Autumn 2005-Neve is not the same as the 2006 model, in many respects. In some respects she is, of course, since she's the basis (and a very important basis) for the new one, but she's sufficiently different that it's odd to look back on that.

as in, he asked you "what about art, music and you?" ?

haha. He got quite mad at me for my taste in music, arguing with him, and the colour of my hair.
