Three different people I know are directly affected by the death of Steve Corbin, a linguist from Churchill. He was on a year out in Peru and he fell through a roof, fracturing his skull. It's always devestating when a sudden accident kills someone so young, but it feels closer to home because this is a person mourned by good friends of mine. I' ( Read more... )

There's an interesting societal comparison between today and a hundred years ago. Then, sex was taboo, but people spoke of death a lot. Today, sex is everywhere and we try and hide away from death.
Neither outlook is particularly healthly, really...

The difference is, I think, that until this past century death was pretty inescapable. Far more people died young. Sex has cycled between in-yer-face and completely-repressed many times, but I think that this is the first time we've been able to hide almost entirely from death.

We pretend we can hide from death. The attitude is usually traced to a period when hiding was impossible so people started to ignore it.
