I've completely failed to get any more writing of my novel done so far

Oh, I'm glad it's not just me. I was planning just to keep going, but I hadn't reckoned on all the catching up with the rest of life that needed doing :-) NaNovember and a holiday and a retreat and Christmas jumping out at me is all a bit much.

I wrote about 2000 extra words, but it's not finished by any means. Am giving up until January at least.

There's a straightforward (well, IMO) answer to how the nobles were ennobled: a previous king did it. Then he died intestate and heirless. To anticipate complaints that this is about the foundation of a nation: suppose that Ruritania invested its money into an expedition to colonise the recently discovered New World, leaving its army underfunded; its neighbour took advantage, betrayed a long-standing treaty, and easily took the country. The king and half of the Court were killed or captured, but a number of nobles (the players included) escaped to the fledgling colony.

While there are plenty of differences, this can be seen as inspired by Portugal in the Napoleonic Wars. When Spain signed a treaty with France allowing 30,000 French troops to pass through Spain and invade Portugal the Portuguese Court (including the monarchs) fled to Brazil. (Napoleon then used the troops to force both claimants to the Spanish throne to abdicate in his favour and then handed it to one of his brothers).
