Hunger Games

I am still trying to stay away from computers (well, as much as I can because my job IS all about them): my back (sacroiliac joint) is still not well and sitting is not very comfortable. This all said about sitting, I was tempted by free tickets (my friend’s son works in a cinema so he got some free tickets for himself, his mother and me) and went ( Read more... )

loved the beard dearly, too :)
and the movie in general was great. but my husband, very much into world-building as a dungeon master, was heavily dissatisfied with the world's infrastructure.

We had a bit of a discussion afterwards too: You see, I thought the worldbuilding in the books was REALLY weak ( I am an engineer-inclined person myself and many moments made me laugh and raise my eye-brows simultaneously). The film creators in my opinion really worked well on filling in the gaps (and leaving the things that were in the "doesn't agree with the laws of physics" category out). So , in my opinion the film was a definite BIG improvement as far as the worldbuilding goes, but yes, improvement on very weak worldbuilding, which probably still left it so-so.

THAT BEARD. I think on some subconscious level it made me like him. :D

From the perspective of reading the books, yeah, I think the Games were a little too streamlined for the film. There wasn't as much that feeling that this is actually really serious, and when they get those extras, like that soup, it's what puts them from likely death back to the living camp. Again, must have been seeking the rating they wanted that affected all these changes. It's weird because in a sense I feel it was a really solid adaptation of the books, but at the same time almost all criticisms I hear of it can be countered with a simple "well they explained that thing better in the books"..

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it. If you fancy reading my review/thoughts (not a very coherent review, mind you), it's here: http://fivil.livejournal.com/702385.html

Both my friend and her son haven't read the books and seemed to understand what was going on well. For me the problem wasn't in the fact that some things weren't explained, but in the way the Game Part of the book seemed to be cut really quite short. But this might have been the intention of the creators? They might have wanted to make it as less "Battle Royale" as possible?

Poor Wes Bentley hasn`t probably been in anything major since American Beauty; that`s when I fell in love with him, so seeing him again was a huge and very pleasant surprise, in spite the loathsome character he plays!

I hope we see more of him again. As you said, Seneka was such a small (and not very "nice" :D) role but for some reason he made such an impression.
