I recently shared a link on Facebook about some stupidity about arming children with concealed weapons "fer a saffer Murika!" And made a comment "repeal the second amendment already." And of course, within a very short time, some nutbag starts in with "herp de doo, we can't do that cuz MURRIKA!" This was my response:

Cannons were a lot more reliable and accurate than you seem to think back in 1776.

Also, private citizens owning them *did* occur. Several "fort" out in the "wildreness" areas were armed by private citizens. With cannon.

Oh yeah, there's this thing called "case shot" that turns a cannon into the world's biggest shotgun. Nasty.
