I think the Type 40 TARDIS bit refers to the fact that there are (have been) different models of TARDISes; the Doctor's is a rather old model, and a Type 40. There are quite a few references to that in Old Who
( ... )
yes, i figured it meant a specific type of model, but i didn't know type 40 was an older model. hmm, that's really interesting! especially b/c my friend humbuggirl mentioned in her recap post that she thinks the cracks in the universe may be tied to the tardis, since it keeps turning up late. or it could just be a throwaway line ;)
i keep enjoying matt smith more and more each week, but like you said, the gaping plot holes and poor execution of the story line prevented me from enjoying this episode as much as the others. still a good laugh and entertaining, but it could've been so much more.
the empty child/the doctor dances are my fave episodes from s1, and two of my absolute fave eps overall from the new series [i haven't seen the classic who eps yet]. if i had written this review with those eps in mind, the recap would've been 100x more negative ;)
Ooh that's an interesting theory though! OK, the TARDIS seems to miscalculate an awful lot and it has been doing this for a while, but the frequency in this new series is really odd. Doesn't quite explain the crack in Amy's room, does it?
TEC/TDD belong to the best episodes ever, no doubt. After watching VotD I read up on Mark Gatiss' wikipedia page that he wrote a script for S4 which also involved Nazis (and the National History Museum), but it was replaced with Fires of Pompeii (another brilliant ep). This makes me wonder if he just wanted to include the WWII-theme, whatever it took, and shoehorned it into the Dalek story? It would explain to me why I didn't get more out of the ep, but who knows. :D
Maybe it was becauase those were the disgusting cookies my gran always had around when I was growing up, but I knew from the second the Doctor pulled out his "detonator" that it was a shameless bluff (using a cookie).
I have no real complaints about the episode, though it was a pretty convoluted scheme for the Daleks to infiltrate Churchill's London and insert a replicant/cyborg/thing to get some Daleks to Earth for when the Doctor shows up and confirms that they are INDEED Daleks, so they can use the progenitor to create their rainbow flavoured Daleks.... I almost would have liked it better if these Daleks hadn't had any idea they were Daleks. Or something.
So this wasn't an ep I'd write home about. And Churchill was a bit too... much, he kinda annoyed me.
ahah we kept saying "IT LOOKS LIKE A COOKIE!" but we didn't realise it actually WAS one. i loved that he ate it as soon as he was called on his bluff ;)

HAHAH THIS MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD F'REAL. i just think the ep could've been executed a lot better, especially b/c other eps involving the daleks are usually way better than this.
awh, i liked churchill! but i can see how he could be irritating to some ;)
I didn't mind it - I've yet to warm to the new boss man in charge, but I'm liking Matt Smith and Amy.
The multi-coloured daleks look like smarties, they remind me of the dalek cakes my mum used to make for parties when I was a kid with smarties stuck on the outside.
I agree that Ian MacNiece made a fab Churchill - spot on! Space travelling Spitfires though…
I think some of the ideas are indeed getting a bit hackneyed, you are right, they need some new ideas - to be honest even daleks and cybermen have been done too many times, they need some new aliens!
As far as a good bit of very silly fun for a saturday teatime though, it's all a good laugh, right?
omg i want these amazing dalek cakes your mum made! what a wonderful idea ♥
i agree, the ep certainly made me laugh, but i think my expectations were too high since i'd enjoyed the last two episodes SO much ;)
i know the show requires us to suspend logic and belief, which i have no complaints with - but normally, i'm entertained enough to not ponder on the inconsistencies or plotholes. it was just different this time.
I'm not sure how she got the shape, but they were covered in chocolate, with smarties stuck on the outside and those long chocolate things for the sink plunger and laser and I think a marshmallow stuck on the top for the head. I've think I've just realised why all our friends thought we had a cool mum!
I am largely meh about this episode. I got bored partway through and zoned out for a bit at some point too, but I'm also pretty tired which didn't help ;p I was expecting better of this episode given the setup we got in the promo, but...there wasn't really all that much going on in this episode and the plot was all over the place and/or lacking. I dunno. :p and the new daaaaleks look funny! and not necessarily in a good way! d'oh.
NEXT WEEK LOOKS LIKE IT'LL BE FUN THOUGH AND IT BETTER NOT LET ME DOWN. WHEEE!
more than the promo itself, i think my expectations were buoyed by the first 2 eps, which i enjoyed TONS. also, i'm usually entertained enough by the show to overlook the plotholes and inconsistencies, but this time that obviously wasn't the case.
oh well - at least we got some colourful daleks out of it! and next week looks brilliant!
"if hitler were to invade hell, i would give a favourable reference to the devil" That is actually a real quote (well a short version of it) My dad pointed that out when we were watching. Churchill said they should ally with Russia, "If Hitler were to invade Hell, I would at least make a favourable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons."
But I was thinking of a pride parade too when I saw the new Dalek design. I don't mind some of it, but they went a little far with all the colors!
i didn't know that was a real quote! thanks so much for the info :)
i initially thought the daleks would only be red, white and blue to look like the flag. but then the other colours rolled out and i immediately thought of pride ;)
