Finally, after travelling from Yorkshire three times in 4 weeks to stare at a vast tidal creek on the Sussex coast, someone managed to egt me on to the whimbrel with the dark rump. Relieved is an understatement.

Also picked up the Bonaparte's gull in Kent. Year list 260.

Interesting. The UK are counting Hudsonian whimbrel as a species? As far as I can determine, the US regard it as one of 7 or 8 subspecies of a widely distributed worldwide whimbrel population.

We were discussing that at the twitch. The BOU has split it. They've also split pacific loon from black-throated diver, black scoter from common scoter and green-winged teal from (eurasian) teal. Last time I heard Audubon hadn't split those either?

If they change their mind and start lumping now, a lot of life listers, including me, will probaly cry.

Pacific Loon and Arctic Loon/Black-Throated Diver are two species according to AOU (I would hate my Arctic loon to disappear!) The scoters are also now split by Audubon. The teals are 'under review'.

How about white-winged scoter and american herring gull. Are those split in the USA?
