Wanting to be with your pet when they die is not morbid in the least. They let my mom hold Harley as they put him down, and i think she would have been even more of a wreck afterwards if they hadn't.

Seriously. Look what it's done to /me/. Every month or so I get absolutely emotionally demolished because something will remind me of Pepper and how I didn't get to be with her when she died.

I would continue to press your mother about letting you house sit, or coming up with some arrangement so that you can be with Drake. Take DAS with you to take care of the other dogs so you can focus on Drake, maybe?
