Have just installed Opera, so I can once again participate in LJ. The switch from WildBlue to Exede has not been without glitches, many of which are quite mysterious. Frinstance, at seemingly random intervals, the usage counter makes unexplained jumps, causing us to hit our Data Allocation limit. For another, I cannot log in to LJ with Firefox ( Read more... )

Welcome back! I missed your comments and posts on cider and things. I am in the Sierras now, and have a job packaging and shipping aromatherapy oils. Its very interesting. And its a 2 mile commute, in a peaceful mountain town. I really like being here, and having a job after months of applications and waiting. Small companies are best.

I look forward to seeing your posts on planting last summer and reviews on local brews, breads, etc. These are healthy, grounded in reality aspects of the small farming life. Really, our world needs more people like you. I hope you can mentor some locals.

Any news on your crops this year? I am now working in aromatherapy, for a company that buys direct from farmers that make essential oils out of herbs and then ship them to my shop where I bottle them and mail out various orders of those products. Its only once removed from the farmer in most cases. The owner of my company does not believe domestic farmers can make essential oils cheap enough and routinely enough to justify the cost of marketing them to customers so we don't do much business with domestic farmers. I think this is a drastic oversimplification and many herbs like basil, marjoram, sage, rosemary, and helichrysum italicum (sp. of sunflower) would grow well here if planned right. Someday that gap will be exploited and someone is going to profit from it. Oh well. At least customers like the exotic locations they're buying from.
