I just read an interesting (terrifying) article on new crowd-control weapons. Lasers to blind, microwaves to cause intense pain, taser nets to convulse whole crowds.... It got me thinking that all this R&D into how to control citizens (pardon me, consumers) is probably driven by the expectation that, at some point, people in general will get sick of the kleptocracy running the world and take up the traditional pitchforks and torches. So there seem to be two choices, if one belongs to the "1%": Try to mold the system into something as fair as possible that rewards hard work, intelligence, and innovation no matter where it comes from... or keep stealing everything in sight and prepare to smash the other 99% when they get fed up.

I think they've made their choice.
