Much as I grieved the loss of David Burke in the post-Reichenbach Granada Holmes, it almost made visual sense to replace him with an actor who looked older, greyer, sadder, even shorter.

Oh wow, what a great concept, that Holmes didn't even recognise Watson on that first encounter! I have chills from this.

Oh lovely, unexpected angst! I really like this piece; we always assume Holmes recognised his best friend from the first time he saw him; what a painful scenario to contemplate and for the detective to unknowingly find out his friend lost his family, aged so much in such a short amount of time, became almost an alcoholic and is a step away from the grave.
