---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lestrade sits in Mr. Holmes’ chair and watches the amateur detective working at his chemistry table.

After weeks with no traces they finally found the cab with which Dr. Watson was kidnapped. It stood abandoned in an old barn and it seems that it was not used after that fateful day.

Mr. Holmes almost destroyed the cab looking for any clues; he checked it for hours for anything which may tell them where the doctor might be held.

He was able to give descriptions of the men who were responsible for the kidnapping and Lestrade did wonder how the doctor could be so easily kidnapped, but after hearing the descriptions of the six men involved it is no longer a surprise - no one would have been able to fight.

The only thing that Mr. Holmes found in the carriage was dirt, carried into the cab by the shoes of the men. He immediately took off to Baker Street to examine the dirt.

Lestrade knows that Mr. Holmes is able to deduce the origin of dirt found anywhere in London, thus Lestrade followed Mr. Holmes back to the flat.

The man was already working and waved him to the chairs in front of the fire. Without any hesitation Lestrade took Mr. Holmes’ seat.
As long as the doctor’s missing he will not sit in his chair.

Even though Lestrade does not know what exactly the other man is doing, he knows that their only true lead may be the dirt and Mr. Holmes is the only man who is able to find it.

A sigh interrupts the silence and Mr. Holmes leans back in his seat to draw a hand over his face. “Now we have to wait for the reaction.”

“Will it tell us where the doctor is?” Lestrade asks and Mr. Holmes stands up to fill two glasses with brandy. “I hope it will, Lestrade. We are running out of time…”

Lestrade nods; although the men wish to harm Holmes and need Watson alive - it is only a matter of time until they grow bored of this sick game and kill the doctor. Or just let him die…

Lestrade takes the offered glass with a small Thank you, while Holmes continues to walk towards the window and looks out into the greying streets.

Silence fills the room and neither man wishes to break it. Lestrade finally hears a sizzling noise and turns his head back to the chemistry table.

“Mr. Holmes?” No answer. “Is that test tube supposed to be smoking?”

Mr. Holmes whirls around and crosses the room with long strides to remove the glass from the Bunsen burner.
Lestrade covers a small cough as the smell drifts over to him and looks up as Mr. Holmes claps his hands once.

“AHA!”
“Mr. Holmes?” Lestrade asks and stands up. “Do you know where Dr. Watson is?”

“I know where the men were at least, Lestrade,” Mr. Holmes answers. “It is possible that this is the same place where Watson is. But I am only able to deduce the general part of London where this dirt originated. I do not have an actual address.”

“But we do have something to work with! We have to check who lives there and maybe we will find someone who has something against you. It is more than we had for weeks now!” Lestrade shouts happily, but frowns when he sees the dark expression on Mr. Holmes’ face.

He walks over to him and lays a gentle hand on one bony shoulder. “Mr. Holmes, we need to work with what we got. We have to do something or we will never be able to find him. And we will find him.”

The grey eyes stay distant for a moment longer, but then they focus again and Mr. Holmes nods sharply. “Yes, this is our only lead and we have to follow it. And who knows - we might be lucky. Whoever has Watson needs me to find him after all.

And as you said - we will find him. There is just no other possibility.”
