Title:  Sehnsucht
Author: Alaylith
Rating: G
Characters: Watson
Summary: Watson longs for home. (July Prompt 27)
WordCount: 273
Prompt: July 27 ~~~ Poem
Requirements: You may do one of two things; use a poem of your choice in your fic (as in quoting part or all of it), or else write your fic in poem form. For this challenge, limericks and other forms of poetry are acceptable even though they will be obviously below the 100-word minimum.
Author's Note: I used a short poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe called "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt" ("Only he who knows what yearning is"). The story is just a little tidbit, as I am quite tired by the long drive. I included an English translation of the poem so you know what it's about. The story takes place right after Waiting. Hope ya like. ;)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watson sits on one box and stares at the small red light in the little window. His repaired lantern still burns, but the hope it lighted is now only a little flicker in his heart.

Watson does not know how long ago he was kidnapped, but he can feel how despair and longing gnaw at his heart.

He feels so lonely; he has not talked for days with any human being - the servants and guards always ignore him when they enter the room.

Most importantly Watson misses Holmes; he misses to hear his voice and music, he misses to observe his work, he misses to stand at his side and fight against criminals.

Watson misses home.

Unbidden a memory arises - a short time after Holmes’ return Watson asked him if he ever felt any longing for their home. Not for his work or the mental stimulation of cases, but for their home in Baker Street. If he ever longed for their shared evenings and conversations, if he ever longed for Mrs. Hudson’s food…

If he ever longed for Watson.

Holmes’ answer was a German poem and the words ‘Now I understand it’.
Watson’s grasp of the language is almost non-existent, but he still remembers the words to this day.

Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt
Weiß, was ich leide!
Allein und abgetrennt
Von aller Freude,
Seh ich ans Firmament
Nach jener Seite.
Ach! der mich liebt und kennt,
Ist in der Weite.
Es schwindelt mir, es brennt
Mein Eingeweide.
Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt
Weiß, was ich leide!

And even though Watson does not exactly know what the poem says… he can understand it.

Here is an accurate English translation I got from the English Wikipedia entry.

Only one who knows longing
Understands what I suffer!
Alone and separated
From all joy,
I look to the heavens
In that direction.
Oh! the one who loves and knows me,
Is far away.
I feel dizzy, and it burns
my insides.
Only one who knows longing
Understands what I suffer!
