I have a theory involving the Akatsuki and the Uchiha clan.
Apologies if this has been proposed before, but I'm putting it forward for discussion's sake ...

I think it's more likely that "madara" is not a name, but then i kinda doubt that the kyuubi will be pulling loanwords out of nowhere. (madara can be a loanword of the english word "murderer", in this case the kyuubi would have been referring to itachi)

'Madara' could be a loanword, now that you mention it ... but there was an old anime movie called 'Madara' (I did a bit of research when the Kyuubi chapter came out, don't ask, I'm that obsessed with Uchiha O_o), and I think it could be the actual name of this Uchiha the Kyuubi met.

Kishimoto is sticking to japanese names, and "madara" is not even a name though, much less japanese :o
